About a year ago I read an article about our little town's Historical Society. They only have 5 members and the youngest is 77. They were holding a plant sale as a fundraiser so that they could pay the taxes on their little building that to City rents to them for $2 /year. In 1928 it was the Stayton Women's Club. I wonder what they did there?

If I had the money I would have made large donation to that group.
Every once in a while you hear about a Little League team that had all their equipment stolen and I would buy them all new equipment.
I might pay the grocery bill for someone who seemed like they needed help. Like the couple in front of us last Saturday who had two kids under 6 in their first carts and two 4 months old twins in their 2nd cart. I think they had to use food stamps to pay for the formula. That's a touchy one though because I would never want to embarass anyone that I was trying to help.
You sometimes hear, on the news, about someone having some awful luck. Their house burned down and their husband died two weeks prior or something like that. I think I would like to anonymously help those people.
Brown Eyed Man has always said he would like to be a philanthropist too. Although he would probably give most of his money to Veterans groups or Gun Rights Groups. Both of those are fine with me too.
If you could give away a large (or small) sum of money to help a person our a group, to whom would you give it and why?

I agree with you - how much fun would it be to spend all your days giving out your money (anonymously, of course) to really deserving people. I heard the other day of a struggling family with a full shopping cart in the grocery store getting to the check out to find that the person in front of them had paid for all their food! How fab is that?!
ReplyDeleteI would start with family members since several of them could use a boost. I'm always fascinated by those stories I hear of anonymous people handing out twenty or hundred dollar bills to random people in need. It may not change a life, but at least it brings some light into someone's life for a short while.

Oh - That's a good one too. I might end up adopting a bunch so Clover had buddies.
DeleteI was just discussing this with my roommate. If I could afford to, I would love to pay one year's tuition for a student in need at the university I attend. I know that tuition is a huge weight sitting on many students shoulders and it would be nice if they had one less thing to worry about. Great post!!

I've actually thought about this a lot. Being the mother of college aged kids who are bright, but not brilliant; talented, but not prodigies; and not particularly athletic, I would set up the Average Kid Scholarship program for kids who are neither rich not poor, nor brilliant or exceptionally talented in any way. A scholarship for hard-working kids who would otherwise have to take out loans to pay for college (like mine).
